A Limerick A Day – Day 30 – Peep Show

I’m kinda like this kid when it comes to Peeps. I’ve loved ’em since waaaaaayyyy back when they only came in yellow and only in the chick shape. And I love them to this day, when you can get them in the bunny shape and Halloween shapes and Christmas shapes and every color of the rainbow and even in chocolate-dipped and chocolate mousse-flavored versions.

I’m not alone in my Peep passion. The mini marshmallow marvels are more popular than ever in their 60th year of existence, and the company that hatches them, Just Born, is enjoying record profits.  I know that there are some people whose enthusiasm for Peeps rests solely on their scientific value. I am also acutely aware that there exist certain weirdos who (shudder) DON’T LIKE PEEPS.

But I’m okay with that. Not everyone can share my undying affection for this über-sweet confection. As long as you refrain from denigrating them in my presence and from shooting them with a rifle, we’ll get along just fine. Even better, if you join me in professing an eternal love for them, I’ll consider you one of my dearest peeps.

.

I’ve a more sweet than bitter confession
To reveal (there’s no point in suppression):
I’ve a love that runs deep
For most everything Peep –
I guess you could call it obsession.

Indulgence I’ve often forsworn of them,
Pledging not to partake in Peep porn and then
Around will come Easter
And this fevered feaster
Finds that with sweet desire I’m Just Born again.

A Limerick A Day – Day 29 – A Whole Lotta Nada

Screen shot 2013-03-30 at 12.13.46 AMOnly two days left in the Limerick-A-Day challenge I gave myself for this month (March Madness, indeed!), and I admit that I’ll be rather happy to see it end.

I did it to jump start my writing, and it certainly has worked and has inspired me. It also has brought me some new online friends and several new followers, which is nice. But now I’ve fallen behind in my housecleaning, my New York Times reading, my laundry, my TV watching, my dogwalking, and my sleep — to name just a few activities put off in favor of my poetic priorities. But hey, there’s got to be a limerick in that somewhere, right?

There once was a woman, Carlotta,
Who hated to write when she oughta,
Because deadlines are worst
For us writers well-versed —
But sometimes you do what you gotta.

A Limerick A Day – Day 27/28 – Is Spring Awesome? It’s Snot.

Spring in the Texas Hill Country brings balmy weather and bluebonnets, bleary eyes and beet-red noses. It’s allergy time, after all, thanks to the lovely trees and flowers that grace our landscape and produce pollen by the pound. It’s really a shame, because the weather’s just so wonderful right now — but if you’re an allergy sufferer in Austin, it’s anything but enjoyable.

This month’s second guest post/collaboration comes courtesy of the lovely, talented and sniffly Wendi Aarons. She’s a friend, a fellow blogger, a Mouthy Housewife and co-producer of Listen To Your Mother Austin.

Like me, Wendi is an allergy sufferer and none too happy about it. Below you’ll find her latest complaint in verse. (Here’s the NSFW version.)

There’s a tiny tickle in my nose;
Of allergies I’m in the throes.
Cedar and oak?
Hardly a joke,
When you’re sneezing from head to toes.

So hit me up with nasal spray,
Pills and shots — even Ben-Gay.
I long to breathe
And feel at ease;
It’s a-pollen to live this way.

Allergies suck; I’m one who knows
how noses flow and suffer woes.
Like you, I take issue
with needing a tissue
so often — this season just blows.
